SUBJ: AGONY OF THE CROSS

Introduction:

Agony - “A state of physical or mental suffer”

Hurt - pain - distress - misery - anguish - woe - affliction

There is no way for us to understand without the Holy Spirit revealing it the agony that Jesus suffered on the cross.

To look at many of the pictures and paintings of yesterday and today fail to truly picture His great suffering on the cross.

Look with me at the Agony that Jesus suffered on the cross.

I. Mental Agony

A. From the beginning Jesus knew how his public ministry would end

(John 3:14 KJV)  "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:"

B. Jesus predicted his crucifixion many times during his earthly ministry

(John 8:28 KJV)  "Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things."

C. The mental agony of being crucified troubled him but he willing accepted God’s plan for his life

(Luke 22:41 KJV)  "And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed," (42)"Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."

II. Physical Agony

A. Sweated blood

(Luke 22:44b KJV) ". . . his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground."

B. A slap in the face

(John 18:22 KJV)  "And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?"

C. He was beaten repeatedly

(Mark 14:65 KJV)  "And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands."

D. He was scourged

(Mat 27:26 KJV)  "Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified."

E. He had a crown of thorns

(John 19:2 KJV)  "And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,"

F. He was nailed to the cross

(Mat 27:35 KJV)  "And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots."

III. Spiritual Agony

A. Jesus bore the sins of mankind

(Luke 23:44-45 KJV)  "And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. {45} And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst."

B. He who knew no sin was made sin for us

(2 Cor 5:21 KJV)  "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

C. For the first time In his life fellowship with God was broken

(Mat 27:46 KJV)  "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

Conclusion: Have you seen the Agony that Jesus suffered for you on the cross? If not, then today look to Jesus and be saved. No one but Jesus could pay your sin debt. And He did on the cross. Repent, believe and be saved today.
