Preacher's Pulpit       Dr. Joe Tims

TEXT: John 7:37-39

SUBJ: THE HOLY SPIRIT

INTRODUCTION:  For a detailed look at the life, ministry, work, character, and person of the Holy Spirit you need to read John 14-16.  In our text, Jesus was being maligned and criticized by the chief priests and pharisees.  Out of this circumstance came a most blessed truth in the Bible:  THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  There are several things that distinguish true Christianity from all other religions of the world.  (1)  Jesus Christ.  The Divine Son of God Who took upon Himself the form of man to accomplish redemption for man through His sacrificial death on the cross.  Jesus is unique in every way.  You cannot divorce Him from Christianity without leaving it as empty as all other religions.  (2)  The Bible.  No other religion has a sacred Book that is Divinely inspired like the Bible.  It is God's revelation to man and is perfect and completely dependable in every way.  (3)  The New Birth.  John 3:3  "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."  No other religion requires or provides for such an experience.  (4)  The Personal Ministry of the Holy Spirit.  This is one important thing that sets apart Christianity from all other religions of the world.  You see the Blessed Holy Spirit mentioned throughout the Bible under different names and titles:  The Holy Spirit, The Holy Ghost, The Spirit of Grace, The Spirit of Truth, The Spirit of Promise, The Spirit of Glory, The Comforter.  The Holy Spirit is active in three great matters:  (1)  He was active in Creation - (Genesis 1:2).  (2)  He was active in Revelation of the Bible to man - (2 Peter 2:21).  (3)  He is active in Regeneration (the spiritual birth that Jesus discussed with Nicodemus) - (Titus 3:5).  Because there is so much error and confusion concerning the Person, operation, and manifestation of the Holy Spirit, it is vital that a Christian have a good Bible understanding of Whom He is and what He does.

I. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A REAL PERSON.

Some claim that the Holy Spirit is merely an impersonal force like gravity or electricity.  Others say that He is just the strong influence that proceeds from God the Father.  However, the Scriptures represent Him as a real Person like Jesus is a real Person.

A. Personal pronouns are used to refer to the Holy Spirit - John 14:16, 17.

B. The Holy Spirit is subject to personal treatment.

G. The Holy Spirit provides the inner comfort and consolation when God's children are stricken with grief - John 14:16, 26.

CONCLUSION:  The work and ministry of the Holy Spirit are wide spread.  He is the Agent of God in the world today that keeps Satan from destroying God's creation.  To study the Scripture concerning this blessed truth brings great encouragement to the child of God.  The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide as we walk in this life.  Thank God for His power and presence.
