Preacher's Pulpit                       Dr. Joe Tims

TEXT: Matthew 9:35-38

SUBJ: Are You A CEO or Shepherd in Your Church?

Introduction:
The Church is undergoing what I believe to be a test of LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY.

I have seen this past year a greater CONTENTION among God's people over LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY.

This CEO LEADERSHIP has come to pass from the preaching of the world standards for success.

Preachers  have preached the pulpit into professionalism.

Preachers have taken the calling out of the ministry and replaced with their model of success.

The result has been the AVERAGE PASTOR who pastors an average of 93 in attendance with more than 100,000 churches running less than 52 in attendance has bought the CEO mentality of leadership.

In doing so, they have lost sight of being a SHEPHERD.

Notice Jesus said,

"But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd." (Mat 9:36)

It is not CEO's,  but Shepherds that Jesus says the Sheep need.

Notice with ME:

I. THE CEO PASTOR

(1 Cor 3:6-8)  "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. {7}So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. {8}Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."

A. SUCCESS

1. 200 Saved and Baptized or Failure.
2. Recruitment over Repentance.
3. Any and Everything tried to attain this success.
4. CEO MENTALITY.
5. When CEO (Pastor) doesn't meet these expectations:
6. 2100 fired in 18 months
7. Clamor for CEO (Pastor) that can cut the mustard.
8. Failure causing Fleeing from the ministry.

B. STAFF

1. I figure to be misunderstood in this point, but maybe not!

2. The CEO Pastor has to HIRE a successful:
   a. Associate
   b. Music Director
   c. Bus minister
   d. Soul Winner
   e. Minister of Education
   f. A RESULT GETTER!!

3. Is it any wonder why even the STAFF many times is the problem in the ministry.

(John 10:13)  "The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep."

II. THE SHEPHERD PASTOR

(Ezek 34:5)  "And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered."

A. 8 out 10 Bible College Pastors will pastor only 150 members.

B. These Sheep need a Shepherd, not a CEO!

C. Example Jesus Sets in John 10

1. Name of every SHEEP
2. Need of every Sheep
3. Location of every SHEEP
4. Danger of every Sheep.

D. This what Solomon said:

(Prov 27:23)  "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds."

CONCLUSION: Yes, there is a higher expectation level with a lower commitments. Yes more is placed upon the shoulders of the Pastor. But the greatest need of today is for a recommitting of the Pastor to be Shepherd. To lay aside that CEO mentality and remember what Paul said in:

(1 Tim 1:12)  "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;"

To preach the gospel with a new urgency and faithfulness.

To remember the Word of God has the answer for all the problems.

Preacher, you are the key to REVIVAL

Please turn it around for the sake of your Sheep.

Remember, the sweetest fruit is home grown fruit.

May God bless each one of you.
