TEXT:  Nehemiah 13:10-11

SUBJ: Why is the House of God Forsaken?

Introduction:
Why is it so hard to get people to come on Sunday to hear the preaching of the Word of God?

Nehemiah the preacher of old asked this same question of his generation.

He not only asked, but as we read his book we find the answers.

There was: neglect of holy things; God was forgotten; His day was disregarded; His Word was disobeyed and His commandments were taken lightly.

What a picture of so many churches today with its half-hearted and irregular attending of its members.

As in the day of Nehemiah there were the few faithful, zealous and dedicated servants of God.

Why must be the minority and not the majority?

(Luke 12:32 KJV)  "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

Reasons I believe that the House of God is Forsaken:

I. People Have Never Really Been Born Again

(2 Cor 4:4 KJV)  "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

A. Church to unsaved people is a waste of time.

B. The devil has blinded their minds to the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.

C. Paul also says in:

(1 Cor 2:14 KJV)  "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

D. This is the fundamental reason folks don't attend Church.

II. People (believers) Don't Want To Obey The Word of God

(Ezek 33:30-32 KJV)  "Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. {31} And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. {32} And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not."

A. They want to hear Bible Preaching.

B. Most even like their preacher and believe he is a good preacher.

C. But they don't want to obey Bible preaching.

(Is 3:9 KJV)  "The show of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves."

D. Their life-style is more important to them than pleasing God.

E. If their life-style is in conflict with God's standards, then He loses!

F. God needs to get updated with the way things have changed.

G. Sin is no longer sin, it's a disease or I can't help myself it my parents fault.

H. If I would have had this or that,  I would have been a better person.

I. No accountability or acceptance for ones own person sin and failure before God.

III. People (Believers) Are No Longer Willing to Pay the Price of Commitment to God

(Phil 3:8 KJV)  "Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,"

 A. I will serve the Lord as long as it doesn't cost me anything.

 B. I will serve the Lord on my own terms, but not on His.

 C. I will be a part of a church as long as it doesn't expect anything from me.

 D. No TIME, TALENT, or TITHE!

 E. I will be a teacher, officer or leader as longs as I can do it my way and it doesn't get in the way of my lifestyle.

 F. I will agree with the Church as longs as it agrees with me.

 G. I will even praise the preacher as long as I agree with his leadership.

Conclusion:  Is there any doubt now as to why folks don't come to Church? I hope not.
