TEXT: 2 Corinthians 8:7

SUBJ: THE GRACE OF GIVING

INTRODUCTION:  Scriptural giving is one of the fundamentals of the faith (2 Corinthians 8:7).  We are commanded to bring our gifts into the storehouse (common treasury of the church) upon the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16:2).  Under grace, we give and do not pay the tithe (Hebrews 7:2-4) and this was four hundred years before the law, and is confirmed in the New Testament; Jesus said concerning the tithe, "These ought ye to have done" (Matthew 23:23).  We are commanded to bring the tithe into the common treasury (Leviticus 27:30; Malachi 3:10).  In the New Testament, the common treasury is the church (Acts 4:34, 35, 37).   God Himself doesn't need our money to support Him.  However, He has ordained that His work on earth should be supported by the giving of His people.  Our giving should not be considered as merely a legal obligation.  We should regard our giving as a blessed privilege.  The inspired Apostle referred to the act of giving as a "grace."

I. WHAT SHOULD I GIVE?

A. First give ourselves to the Lord - 2 Corinthians 8:5.

B. Give tithes and offerings - Malachi 3:8.

1. The tithe is one tenth of our increase - Genesis 28:22; Leviticus 27:32.
2. Offerings pertain to what we give beyond the tenth.  NOTE:  This could range anywhere from a very small offering to a generous sacrifice.

II. WHEN SHOULD I GIVE?

A. Firstfruits - Proverbs 3:9.

B. When you gather for worship with God's people - 1 Corinthians 16:2.

III. WHERE SHOULD I GIVE?

A. This matter is not left to our own judgment - Deuteronomy 12:13, 14; Hebrews 8:5.

B. The storehouse - Malachi 3:10.  NOTE:  Today, the storehouse is the church - 1 Corinthians 16:2.

IV. HOW SHOULD I GIVE?

A. Willingly - 2 Corinthians 8:12.

B. Cheerfully - 2 Corinthians 9:7.

C. Expectantly - Ecclesiastes 11:1.

D. Patiently - Galatians 6:9.

E. Worshipfully - Proverbs 3:9.

V. WHY SHOULD I GIVE?

A. God's Word teaches it - Matthew 23:23; Hebrews 7:8-10.

B. It is God's only plan for the support of His work - Malachi 3:10.

C. To prevent God's displeasure - Haggai 1:6; Malachi 3:9, 11.

D. To receive the blessings of God - Malachi 3:10; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:8.

E. Responsibility - 2 Corinthians 8:13, 14.

F. Gratitude - Matthew 10:8.

G. Love for the Lord - Mark 14:3; John 14:15; 2 Corinthians 8:24.

CONCLUSION:  Many have tried to excuse away the plain teaching in the Bible concerning giving.  For those who have faithfully practiced it, they have first hand, evident proof of what happens when you give back to God what is rightfully His.  You cannot truly love God without giving.  And you cannot out give God!
