SUBJ: Sins of The Tongue

Introduction:
The sins of the tongue are among the most devastating sins.

Of the 7 sins hated by God mentioned in:

(Prov 6:16-19) "These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: {17}A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, {18}An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, {19}A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."

Notice that 3 refer to the tongue!

The Bible exhorts a Christian not to ever share something bad about a person unless that person is part of the problem or solution.

(Mat 18:15-17)  "Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. {16} But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. {17} And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican."

The Bible says, "That if in doubt, don't talk about it!"

Sins of the tongue are a sign of the believer reverting back to the old ways of life.

(Rom 3:13-14)  "Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: {14}Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:"

(James 4:11)  "Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge."

You turn to Ephesians Chapter 4 and you will find that Paul warns the believer not to fall into the life patterns of the unbeliever after being saved:

(Eph 4:17-22)  "This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, {18}Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: {19}Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. {20}But ye have not so learned Christ; {21}If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: {22}That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;"

(Eph 4:25)  "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another."

(Eph 4:29-32)  "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. {30}And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. {31}Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: {32}And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

There is great damage done to the Church of Jesus Christ through the uncontrolled tongue of a church member

Verbal Sins (tongue) destroy families and churches alike!

Sins of gossip, slander, maligning, judging, backbiting and boasting are: hateful, selfish and destructive.

(James 3:5-6) "Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! {6}And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell."

The Bible calls those who cannot control their tongues troublemakers in the cause of Christ.

(Psa 52:2) "Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully."

The Bible also says that the Pastor is commanded to warn  people against the misuse of their tongue in the Christ of Jesus Christ.

(2 Tim 2:14-17) "Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. {15}Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. {16}But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. {17}And their word will eat as doth a canker (gangrene): of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;"

Sins of the tongue will bring the same judgement to the person as they judged the other person!

(Mat 7:2)  "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."

The Bible warns us not to be involved in the following types of Tongue Sins:

1. Backbiting - slander, defamation of character, evil speech - Psa 15:3; Proverbs 25:23, 2 Cor 12:20

2. False Witness - lying about people - Prov 25:28, Prov 19:9

3. Dissimulation (without hypocrisy, unfeigned) - (Luke 20:20)  "And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor."

4. Busybody - self-appointment monitor or one who is always trying to straighten others out - Matt 7:3-5

5. Talebearing - whispering behind backs - Prov 11:13, 17:9

6. False Accusation - (Psa 52:2) "Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully."

God provides protection for the believer who is victim of such sins of the tongue:

(Job 5:19-21)  "He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. {20}In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword. {21}Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh."

In fact the Bible says that a spiritual person is one who can control his or her tongue:

(James 3:2)  "For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body."

The Bible states that a Christian can lengthen his or her life and find great happiness in avoiding the sins of the tongue.

(Psa 34:12-13)  "What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? {13}Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile."

Conclusion:
Loose talk must stop in the Church of Jesus Christ now!

It is causing harm, destruction and one day death among God's people.

How would you like to be the one who told something untrue and caused a man to shoot his wife and then kill himself?

How would you like it to be on record that you destroy someone or cause great damage in the Lord's Church.

Well, it is all possible when you cannot control your tongue!

This sin should be confessed just like, adultery, fornication,  murder or etc.

(1 John 1:9)  "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
