SUBJ: What Is God Saying Through All This Tragedy?

Introduction:
1. Many things about this world make it a place in which tragedy can happen.

 A) Human selfishness.
 B) Freedom of choice.
 C) Natural law.

2. Far too much tragedy has been in the news lately for comfort.

 1) Lives have been cut short.
 2) Material destruction beyond imagination.

3. God expects us to learn from tragedy.

4. He is trying to tell us something.

 1) There should be warning in tragedy.
 2) There should be motivation in tragedy.
 3) There should be remembrance in tragedy.

Notice three things about tragedy we should learn:

I. LIFE IS FRAGILE.

 1) Life is likened to a vapor. James 4:14
 2) All flesh is as grass. 1 Pet. 1:24
 3) We have no idea what tomorrow may bring. Prov. 27:1
 4) We cannot control the length of our days. Luke 12:19, 20
 5) Today is all we could really have left.

II. OUR TIME FOR SERVICE TO GOD IS LIMITED.

 1) Consider the Parable of the Talents. Matt. 25:14ff

  1. All of us have been given talents and opportunities.
  2. All of us will give an account soon. v.19

 2) Have you dealt faithfully with what the Lord has entrusted you with ?

  1. Time
  2. Talent
  3. Tithe
  4. Offerings
  5. Witnessing
  6. Faithfulness

 3) Or will you simply have to say, "I wished I had been faithful!"

 4) Or will you find yourself trying to make excuses when He comes. Vvs. 24-31

 5) Or will you be found doing your duty when your life is over?

III. OUR TIME TO DEAL WITH SIN IS LIMITED.

 1) We must deal with sin.

  1. All have sinned. Rom. 3:23
  2. Sin separates us from God. Isa.  59:2
  3. There are terrible consequences for failing to deal with sin. Rev. 20:11-15

 2) A plan has been given for dealing with sin.

  1. John 3:16
  2. Col 1:14
  3. Rom 10:9-13

 3) But it must be acted upon now!

(2 Cor 6:2 KJV)  "(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)"

 4) It's too late after we die.

 5) After death is the judgment. Heb. 9:27

 6) The saddest thing about a life cut short is that there are no more opportunities to be SAVED!

 7) God is trying to tell us something in tragedy.

 8) His lessons of motivation and warning have been given.

 9) The only hope for American is a Return to God!

(2 Chr 7:14 KJV)  "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Conclusion:

1. How we are affected by tragedy depends on us.

(Job 1:20-21 KJV)  "Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, {21} And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

2. Are we hearing the message of God in tragedy?

 1) Do you realize that life is fragile?
 2) Do you know that your time for doing God's will is limited?
 3)  Do you know that your time for dealing with sin is limited?
